The Power of God’s Holiness
Our church body just experienced a powerful time in the presence of God. It all stemmed from being wrapped in the knowledge of His Holiness.
Let me explain.
How it Happened
Last Sunday, we met in the same place we’ve always met; at the same time we always meet; with the same people that always gather together every Sunday to worship God. The setting had not changed. Yet as soon as the first worship song was over, there was a palpable difference on this Sunday from most previous church services. People could feel the presence of God.
It’s possible that people came together more prepared, more prayed up, more open to the Spirit’s work. It may be that the worship band spent more time in prayer or played a song with which they were more passionate.
In any case, there is no doubt as to the vehicle God used to pour Himself out upon us: Our meditation upon His Holiness. The theme of the song, and of the rest of the worship music that morning, was His Holiness. The prayer during the worship singing praised His Holiness. Pastor’s preaching featured His Holiness.
It was all about the Holiness of God.
Why it Happened
A couple of weeks ago, Pastor received a copy of my publication, “Why God is So Amazing! Book 1 – The Holiness of God.” For those who are unfamiliar with it, it is the first in a series of books that teaches about God’s attributes. It is written as a study guide with five daily sessions and simple exercises to assist in remembering and highlighting the main points in each session.
I realize that many people know that God is Holy. I suspect that most people don’t feel the need to study God’s holiness or any other attribute of God. However, as I have taught and preached over the years, I have come to recognize that most Christians actually have a very poor concept of God.
This is not something new to our generation; even the ancient Israelites had an insufficient understanding of Him. Throughout the Old Testament, we read about them treating God as inferior; they were unmoved or apathetic about His word, His commands and His presence.
Here is where things become stunning: when we turn back to Him, He shows up in a big way.
When the Israelites turned from doubting God and trusted Him in that first Passover, they experienced the power and the presence of God at the Holy Mountain (Exodus 19:16-19). Afterwards, the people understood the Holiness of God (Exodus 20:18-19).
The same has been true throughout history. When people turn to God and hear His words, they experience His presence and recognize His Holiness. It is still true today.
Like the Israelites, many Christians are familiar with God but we haven’t experienced Him fully because we have an imperfect knowledge of Him. In other words, even though we think we know Him, we often don’t.
God loved, cared about and knew each Israelite, even in their ignorance. However, He was able to show Himself in a more powerful way when they became more knowledgeable of Him. Even Moses needed to be taught that we must show respect when we step into the Holiness of God (Exodus 3:5).
What Happens When We Understand God’s Holiness
When Pastor read the book, he came away renewed. In his case, he is a pastor who has taught from the pulpit for over 20 years. He has gone to seminary. He is a student of the word. Yet, he gave himself to the study and came away in awe of God’s Holiness. That translated to the music, the scripture reading the prayer and the preaching. When people become aware of and worship the Holiness of God, He shows up in a powerful way.
I would like all of you to experience that. If you haven’t already received a copy, you can purchase one right here. When we appreciate the Holiness of God, we will worship differently, think about God differently and live our lives differently.
